Diane Hartley, LL.B.

Diane was born in Winnipeg but moved with her parents to Long Beach, California where she spent her formative years. She returned to Canada in 1973, settling initially in Victoria BC where she attended the University of Victoria Faculty of Education. Her education was interrupted when she moved back to Winnipeg in 1976. From 1979 to 1996, Diane worked for Legal Aid Manitoba in a support staff capacity, while continuing her education on a part-time basis at the University of Manitoba. She graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1995 and articled with the Brandon Office of Legal Aid, receiving her Call to the Bar in June 1996.

In July 1995, she joined Sims & Company in Minnedosa where she practiced as an associate lawyer. She continued in full-time practice until August 2000, when she accepted a position as an instructor at Assiniboine Community College where she taught a number of law related courses to Office Administration and Business Administration students. She obtained her Certificate in Adult Education while there.

Diane returned to Sims & Company in 2005 on a part-time basis and now limits her work to solicitor's transactions and legal research and drafting. She also serves as a Learning Group Facilitator for a number of modules delivered by the Law Society of Mantioba to articling students.

Since moving to Minnedosa, Diane has been very active in the community. She was elected to Town Council in 2002 and re-elected in 2006, where she has been involved with many committees of council. She has also served on many community Boards, including Frontier Trading Company, the Minnedosa Agricultural Society, Communities in Bloom, the Centennial Handi-Van Committee, the Minnedosa Fitness Centre Board, the Minnedosa and Area Food Bank, the Minnedosa District Museum and Heritage Village Corp., and the Minnedosa Community Development Corporation for which she chairs the Tourism Committee. She has also served on the Manitoba Women's Advisory Council.

Diane lives with her husband Mel, in one of Minnedosa's heritage homes which they have spent countless hours restoring. Together they love to travel, and particularly enjoy trips to visit their daughter and son-in-law in Ottawa, the in-laws in Newfoundland, and all the friends and relatives Diane left behind in California. She is an avid runner, and has participated in a number of Manitoba Marathon relay teams and one half-marathon (so far). She enjoys cooking the unusual, and gets great pleasures from getting her hands dirty in the garden.
